Artist Teddy Bears by Rosalie Carpio - Meet the Teddy Bear Artist

Hi, I'm Rosalie Carpio, an Aussie living in Hong Kong. I've lived here for over 20 years and love Hong Kong. It's such a vibrant and exciting city. I live here with my wonderful Filipino husband Tony (visit his website) and my two beautiful boys, Bernard and Christopher.

Sewing my bears brings some tranquilty to such a hectic lifestyle and my bears have become a big hit with my friends. I've always loved bears and I still have my childhood bear. He watches over all my creations.

My step into the bear world happened quite by chance. It started with my girlfriend, Christine. I was at home in Melbourne for a holiday and stayed with her on my last night, when I admired a beautiful mohair bear which she had made. It was love at first sight (you know how it is) and she gave him to me. I was over the moon!

She then sent me a mohair bear kit for Christmas and I started sewing in January 1999 and I haven't looked back! My passion has grown, as has my supply of mohair!!! In the first 10 months, I made over 60 bears, I couldn't help myself. I love making a variety of colours and am inspired by the fabrics and the rich lustrous textures of the fabric. I love the mohair medium and refuse to work with anything else, so far!

I owe my sewing skills to my mother, Gwen Rose, who was a very talented and creative dressmaker. She made the most stunning outfits, dancing costumes, wedding dresses and hats too, all her life. She says she can't thread a needle now, which is such a shame, because it would have been wonderful to have her as a partner with me in this.

My greatest pleasure is seeing that little face emerge. I love the contact with the eyes, and once I see a bear looking back at me, I know I've got a sweet bear on my hands. And if I prick my finger when I'm working on a bear, I know that this bear will have a bit extra heart and soul!

My bears are fully jointed, and I use nuts and bolts. As I love to hear my bears talk back to me, I put growlers in every bear I can. Oh, why don't they make smaller growlers? I wish I could put them in all my bears! Plus my bears come with an Australian Passport, complete with passport photo, and all their details.
